How They Saw the World
Zeno arrives in Athens a shipwrecked merchant and discovers something more valuable than the cargo he lost: the insight that virtue alone is sufficient for a good life. The universe is a living, rational organism governed by logos, and the wise person aligns their will with this cosmic order rather than raging against what they cannot change. External circumstances — wealth, health, reputation — are merely preferred or dispreferred indifferents, never true goods. From a painted porch in the Athenian agora, he launches a school that will shape emperors and slaves alike for five centuries.
