Plato sees the visible world as a flickering shadow cast by something perfect and permanent that most people never bother to look for. Behind every crooked table stands the Form of Table; behind every act of courage, Courage itself — radiant, unchanging, and more real than anything you can touch. The philosopher's task is to climb out of the cave of sensation and stand blinking in the light of pure intelligibility. He builds an entire Academy on the conviction that the highest form of love is the desire to know what is eternally true.
