How They Saw the World
Mill rescues utilitarianism from the charge of pig philosophy by distinguishing between higher and lower pleasures — it is better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. The only legitimate reason for society to constrain individual liberty is to prevent harm to others; beyond that, the individual is sovereign over their own body and mind. He is one of the first major philosophers to argue that the subjection of women is not natural but a relic of brute force enshrined in law, and that liberating half the human race would double the world's intellectual resources. His harm principle draws a bright line between the individual and the collective that remains the load-bearing wall of liberal democracies.
