How They Saw the World
Hegel sees all of reality as the self-unfolding of Spirit — Absolute Mind working itself out through the contradictions of history, each collision of thesis and antithesis producing a higher synthesis that preserves what was true in both. History is not a random sequence of events but a rational process through which freedom progressively realizes itself in institutions, art, religion, and philosophy. The master-slave dialectic reveals that self-consciousness can only arise through recognition by another, making mutual dependence the hidden engine of all human progress. His prose is notoriously opaque, but the vision behind it is staggering: the universe is thought thinking itself, and every conflict is a labor pain of reason coming to know its own nature.
