How They Saw the World
Aquinas believes that faith and reason are two wings of the same bird, and that Aristotle's philosophy, properly understood, leads to the doorstep of Christian revelation. He constructs five proofs of God's existence not from scripture but from the observable structure of the world — motion, causation, contingency, degrees of perfection, and purpose. Natural law is written into the fabric of creation, accessible to any rational being regardless of creed, and human law that violates it is no law at all. His Summa is an architecture of the universe in question-and-answer form, massive and methodical as a cathedral built of syllogisms.
